'Patent ambushes' are when a company takes part in designing a standard and pushes for a particular technology, only to reveal later that it owns patents which covers the technology. PC Pro gives the example of the development of the SenderID standard which was supposed to authenticate e-mail -- the standard fell apart when Microsoft revealed it had intellectual property tied up in the CallerID technologies which it was contributing.
