BBC: MTV is launching a music download service, dubbed Urge, which will be featured on Microsoft's Media Player and "will offer users 2 million songs from Wednesday that can be bought either separately for $0.99 (£0.53) or via a monthly subscription". OK, that's great, that's cool, a little late to market but anyway. What gets me is this paragraph near the end:
However, entertainment industry attorney and author Steve Gordon asked "whether the consumer really wants a service that's only compatible with non-iPod players".
By non-iPod players he means EVERY OTHER PLAYER ON THE MARKET! It seems a bit stupid to complain that a service isn't compatible with iPods when Apple refuses to let any other service hook into its FairPlay DRM system.
This Cult of Mac ideology is getting out of hand...I was amused to read in the
iTunes page on Wikipedia the following disclaimer: "The correct title of this article is iTunes. The initial letter is capitalized due to technical restrictions." Your average member of the Cult of Mac is more interested in following Apple's marketing message than the rules of grammar. And they wonder why people laugh at them.
Anyway, MTV and Microsoft together may have the clout to take on the iTunes near-monopoly, but I'm not holding my breath...I'm not a fan of the media player. I'm still waiting for a decent online music store.
